A platform doctors trusted
rebuilt for the modern world

Medulla has been used by doctors in emergency wards since 2009. Thar Bionics came to Digitea to bring it into the cloud era without losing what made it indispensable.

Emergency wards. Overcrowded rooms. Handwritten reports.

In injury and emergency wards across India, doctors are required to produce detailed medical legal documents for police, courts, and insurance proceedings. These reports run multiple pages. They have always been written by hand, in rooms that are anything but quiet.

The doctors who use Medulla say it is ultra fast compared to writing by hand. It is structured, consistent, and clear enough that police and courts can read it without confusion. In an emergency ward, that matters enormously.

From locked legacy to modern platform

Before
Medulla 2009
Windows Desktop
  • 🔒 License key activation, tied to individual machines
  • 🖥 Windows only, no cross-platform access
  • 💾 Local storage, no cloud, no backups
  • 📝 Still better than handwriting, but constrained
  • 🔧 C# codebase, aging and difficult to extend
  • 📍 Had to be physically present at the licensed machine

After
Medulla Today
Web and Cloud
  • 🌐 Web based, accessible on any device, anywhere
  • ☁️ Cloud hosted with secure data storage and backups
  • Modern Next.js frontend built for speed
  • 🔧 Django backend with a clean microservices architecture
  • 📋 Same trusted document workflows, faster and cleaner
  • 🔄 Phased rollout preserving continuity for existing users

Everything. Again.

Same approach as every Digitea engagement. We came in at the start and owned every layer through to phased production deployment.

01
🧭
Initial Consulting
Understood the legacy product deeply before touching anything. Defined what needed to change, what needed to stay, and what the migration path had to look like for existing users.
02
🔬
Product Research
Researched how doctors actually use the platform in emergency settings. That informed every interface and workflow decision — speed and clarity above everything.
03
🗺
Product Roadmap
Designed a phased rollout plan so the transition from legacy to modern happened without disrupting doctors who depend on the tool daily.
04
⚙️
Tech Selection and Infrastructure
Chose Next.js and Django as the foundation. Set up cloud infrastructure built for the reliability that medical and legal use cases demand.
05
👥
Team Assembly
Assembled the engineering team and led delivery across the full stack, keeping quality and timeline aligned throughout the rebuild.
06
🎨
UI and UX Design
Redesigned the interface for the web while preserving the familiarity that existing users rely on. Fast to use in a busy ward. Clear enough for a courtroom.
07
Branding and Identity
Refreshed the Medulla identity for its modern relaunch. Handled by Digitea's marketing team, keeping the trust of the original while signalling a new era.
08
💻
Full Stack Development
Complete rebuild in Next.js and Django with a microservices architecture. Designed to be extended and maintained without the constraints of the original codebase.
09
🗣
User Interviews and Testing
Tested with real doctors using the platform in clinical settings. Iterated until the workflows matched how emergency wards actually operate.
10
🚀
Phased Deployment
Managed a careful phased rollout so that existing users transitioned without friction. Currently live and expanding in stages.

How we rebuilt a 15 year old platform without breaking trust.

01
Deep Dive Into the Legacy Product
Spent time understanding Medulla as it existed. What doctors loved about it, what they tolerated, and what the constraints of the old stack made impossible.
02
Research With Clinical Users
Spoke with doctors using the platform in real emergency settings. Understood the pace of their work, the documents they needed to produce, and what fast actually meant to them.
03
Roadmap and Migration Strategy
Built a phased plan that allowed Medulla to be rebuilt and relaunched without disrupting the users who depended on it daily.
04
Stack Selection and Cloud Infrastructure
Chose Next.js and Django for longevity and performance. Set up cloud infrastructure with the reliability standards medical legal data demands.
05
Design, Branding and Development
Redesigned the interface and refreshed the brand. Built the full product from the ground up across the new stack with a clean microservices backend.
06
Testing and Phased Rollout
Tested with real users. Refined based on feedback. Currently rolling out in phases to ensure continuity across all existing and new users.

Rebuilding a platform that has been trusted since 2009 is not a simple job. Digitea understood the weight of that. Vaarun took ownership of the entire process and the team delivered something modern, reliable, and built to last. Exactly what we needed.
Have something that needs rebuilding?

Old platform. New possibilities.

We know how to modernise without losing what works.
